Andreas Christensen nets winner as Barcelona beat PSG in first-leg thriller

Barcelona seized the initiate in their Champions League quarter-final with Paris St Germain after Andreas Christensen’s header secured a 3-2 win from a thrilling first leg at Parc des Princes.

Substitute Christensen, who won the competition with Chelsea in 2021, nodded home an Ilkay Gundogan corner just two minutes after coming off the bench to add to Raphinha’s double.

PSG trailed at the break following Raphinha’s opener but looked well placed to take a lead to Spain next week when quick-fire strikes from former Barca forward Ousmane Dembele and Vitinha turned a topsy-turvy tie in their favour early in the second period.

Eddie Howe urges Newcastle to build on FA Cup success over Sunderland

Asked if they could use the win as a launchpad, head coach Howe said: “Well, hopefully. That’s how we have to look at it.

“Naturally when you don’t win for a period of time, confidence can be affected. Our players are the same as any others.

“Today will have done them the world of good. We’ve not just won the game, but we’ve performed well, we’ve scored goals, we’ve kept a clean sheet so all round, it’s a very good day.”

Victory over the Black Cats was significant – it was a first in the FA Cup under Howe after third-round exits at the hands of League One sides Cambridge and Sheffield Wednesday in the last two seasons.

Asked about the prospect of a cup run, Howe said: “We’d love that. The third round has not been kind to us the…

Cristiano Ronaldo has insisted dethroned European champions Portugal will return stronger following their defeat to Belgium.

How far can England go at Euro 2012?

England defeated Euro 2012 co-host Ukraine 1-0 last night to set-up a quarter-final meeting with Italy on Sunday evening.

Wayne Rooney s goal was enough to secure victory for the Three Lions.

It may not have been England’s best performance at a major competition but victory was enough to win them group D.

Solid

It was typical display by a Roy Hodgson team. The team produced a solid display and managed to come into the game a bit more in the second half.

England looked organised and hard to break down and that’s the sort of teams Roy Hodgson produces.

Lucky
